“…straight lines in the yard…” Lili Bauer, Google review

How a lawn gets its straight lines.

People notice the stripes before anything else.

Scroll, and watch one yard get done.

Drawing of a front yard from above A red stand-on mower lays alternating light and dark stripes across a front lawn, then the edges get trimmed and the concrete gets blown clean. Example drawing, not a real yard. LIGHTER DARKER DARKER LIGHTER
1 of 6First pass
  1. Pass one

    Aim at something far off.

The first pass sets every pass after it.

Line it up on a fixed point past the end of the yard and hold it.

Our crew, from one of our own videos.

  2. Pass two

    Turn and come back.

Now the blades lean the other way.

That is the whole trick: the same grass, bent two directions.

  3. Back and forth

    Light, dark, light, dark.

Grass bent away from you looks lighter.

Bent toward you it looks darker. No paint, no dye.

  4. The trimmer

    Then the edges.

The grass stops where it should.

  5. The blower

    Nothing left on the concrete.

Clippings come off the walk and the drive before we load up.

The yard looks done from the street.

  6. Your turn

    Now walk to the porch.

Stand at the other end of the yard and the stripes swap.

Which way they run is a choice, so tell us what you like.

Example drawing, not a real yard. We change direction through the season, because Ohio State Extension calls varying it every one to two mowings crucial for the grass.

Mulch and beds

Black mulch. Clean edge.

Fresh mulch makes a yard look finished.

The cut edge is what makes it look sharp.

We trim the shrubs, clean out the bed, re-cut the curve and spread it even.

Ohio State Extension says no more than 2 to 3 inches, kept off the trunk.

So that is how we lay it.

Landscape design

Base first. Then the beds.

A square cut clean into the lawn.

Gravel laid, then tamped by hand.

Then the raised beds go on top and stay level.

Most of a good landscape job is what you never see again.

One number, all year

Mowing in July. Snow in January.

Around here the last spring freeze normally lands near April 22, the first fall freeze near October 24.

Then about 37 inches of snow in a normal winter. That is NOAA, at Toledo Express.

Where we work

Toledo, and out as far as Delta.

Our service area runs from Sylvania and Toledo through Maumee and Perrysburg.

From there it goes west through Whitehouse and Swanton to Delta.

Ground changes along the way, from heavy clay near the river to sand toward Oak Openings.

So the yard in Waterville and the yard in Swanton do not get the same plan.
